You may well be wondering what on earth does scichopagan mean? Then again you might have noticed the site’s tagline and realised that it’s a portmanteau word, made up from the words science, psychology and pagan. Please allow me to indulge in a little elaboration:
noun : a person holding religious beliefs other than those of the main world religions
adjective: relating to pagans or their beliefs
The above is a fairly standard dictionary definition of pagan but begs the question: what do you class as a “main world religion”? That’s a whole topic in itself and the only point I wanted to make here is that wherever you draw the line, there are going to be a lot of people, with a plethora of different beliefs, who fall under the dictionary definition of pagan… and that’s just the dictionary definition.
When you consider that many religions, and subdivisions within religions, consider anybody outside of their group to be “pagan”, then chances are there’ll some group or other who consider YOU to be pagan even if you subscribe to a “main world religion”. Even if YOU consider yourself to be pagan then you probably have your own take on what that means.
As for me, and this is where the scicho part comes in, my own home grown flavour of paganism is largely based upon science and psychology. For example: I mark the solstices and equinoxes, which are scientific facts (unless you believe the world is flat and all that stuff about it revolving around the sun is a huge conspiracy). At the same time as being awed by the real, natural, world, and the universe beyond that, I am fascinated and dumbfounded by what we, as humans, can do with our minds… and I don’t mean psychic abilities and woo, I mean reasoning, creativity, the subtle ways in which we can be misguided and upset, and the ways in which we can make conscious and deliberate changes to our way of thinking.
Much of my personal practices and celebrations have far more to do with psychology than the invoking some external power… though I find those ideas fascinating too.
If this kind of stuff intrigues you, then please come on in, take a load off, and enjoy my blog.
